The story of VML Winery began with a fourth-generation Italian winemaker who had a passion to make single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Sonoma Coast and the Russian River Valley because of its cool climate and ideal soils.

Virginia Marie Lambrix’s family has been making wine in the Veneto region of Italy for over 70 years, and because VML Winery is part of the Truett Hurst portfolio of wines, gave them access to growers in Sonoma County.

There is also a strong commitment to organic farming and sustainability. The winery uses organic farming methods and is certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). VML Winery farms biodynamically and is a member of the “1% or the Planet program,” which donates 1% of its profits to support environmental organizations.

The Line Up of Wines I Tried

The art on the bottle is meant to express the uniqueness and unique spirit of the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. My line-up included four wines that came from the Appellation Series and the Single Vineyard Series.

2020 VML Ritchie Chardonnay (SRP $55) — minerality combined with apple, apricot, vanilla, and nice acidity. My type of chardonnay.

2021 VML Russian River Chardonnay (SRP $37) – the wine is made from fruit from four vineyards and different clones. I tasted green apple, almond, citrus and vanilla. Lots of aromatics in this one.

2018 VML Earth Pinot Noir (SRP $60) – this wine began as an experiment to see how Pinot Noir would grow in the northeastern and warmer regions in the Russian River. It’s intense with black cherry, baking spice, earth, and vanilla. Really enjoyed this expression and style.

2019 VML San Remo Pinot Noir (SRP $68) — this is the last vintage of this wine and it was delicious.  I tasted notes of strawberry, raspberry, vanilla, rosemary, and cherry cola. It got better with time, so the winery recommends decanting an hour before drinking.

It is evident from tasting these wines that you can taste their sense of place and the uniqueness of their heritage. Combined with. VML’s commitment to sustainability, the magic shines through.
