Power Couple in Wine

I recently had the pleasure of sampling four new releases from one of my favorite winemakers, Bibiana González Rave, and her Alma de Cattleya wines. Over the years, Bibiana has consistently crafted exceptional wines while telling a great story, and these latest offerings prove the wines remain as strong as ever. Each bottle showcases her talent for creating wines that beautifully express the terroir of Sonoma County while remaining approachable and food-friendly.

Colombian Orchids and the Inspiration for the Name of the Winery

I last had the chance to talk to Bibiana in November of 2023 when I was struck by what a soulful winemaker she is. Her winery, Alma de Cattleya, reflects this spirit in its very name. “Alma,” Spanish for soul, combined with “Cattleya,” the Spanish word for orchid and Colombia’s national flower. The name pays homage to her roots while capturing her winemaking philosophy. She speaks passionately about how the terroir’s soul breathes life into her wines, creating a unique expression of place in each bottle.

The Alma de Cattleya Line-Up

First up, the 2023 Alma de Cattleya Chardonnay Sonoma County. This wine has notes of citrus, pears, and flowers, with just a touch of butter. What I love about this Chardonnay is how well-balanced it is – you get great texture and fruity aromatics, but there’s also ample acidity to keep things fresh.

Next, I tried the 2024 Alma de Cattleya Rosé of Pinot Noir. It has notes of strawberry and rose petals, with a hint of citrus. The texture is silky smooth, but there’s this nice minerality that keeps it interesting.

The 2023 Alma de Cattleya Pinot Noir was a great wine. It’s got this beautiful ruby color and aromas of cherry and subtle spice. On the palate, it’s all about balance – the fruit is there, but it’s not overpowering, and there’s this lovely earthy note to go with the fruit.

The final wine was the 2023 Alma de Cattleya Sonoma County Syrah. This North Rhône inspired wine is a great expression of a Syrah. Lots of notes of jasmine, violets, licorice, blackberries, strawberries, and cinnamon. I love a good Syrah, and this is one good Syrah.

What I love is how Bibiana continues to pour her heart and soul into these wines. The name Alma de Cattleya isn’t just for show – it truly represents the soul of Colombia and the spirit of Sonoma in every bottle.
