The Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail has quietly established itself as a top wine destination nestled between the stunning Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Virginia. Away from the crowds and hustle of more well-known wine regions, Shenandoah offers an experience of family-owned wineries, passionate winemakers, and tasting rooms that blend tradition with innovation.
Earlier this year, I wrote an article about some of Virginia’s top wines at the Governor’s Cup and shortly after, I heard from the folks at the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail, who educated me about this region.

What makes the Shenandoah Valley special is its strong connection to the land. Family-owned wineries pour passion into every bottle, crafting wines with a distinct sense of terroir that reflects the region’s mountain climate and soil. From cool-climate varietals like Riesling and Viognier to elegant reds like Cabernet Franc, the region offers a wide range of flavors.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the Shenandoah Valley is its mix of tradition and innovation. With 40 wineries on the trail, many honor traditional old-world methods while also pushing the boundaries with new techniques.

I had the opportunity to taste seven wines from the area, and I was surprised by the diversity.
- 2020 Briecdé Sparkling Winchester — Lively and effervescent, with notes of green apple, citrus, and a touch of brioche.
- 2020 Muse Vineyards Petit Verdot — Notes of dark cherry, plum, and violet with a hint of spice.
- 2021 Jump Mountain Livia Red Blend – Flavors of cherry and strawberry, with earthy notes and herbs.
- 2019 Jump Mountain Borderland Red Blend – A sophisticated blend with blackberry, black currant, and dried herbs.
- 2021 Bluestone Vineyard Merlot – This soft Merlot features prominent flavors of plum, cocoa, and dried herbs.
- 2021 Bridgewater Crimson – Notes of cherry, strawberry, and Asian spice. This Virginia red blend was made in collaboration with Bridgewater College and Bluestone Vineyards.
- 2019 Rockbridge Vin d’ Or – Notes of apricot and orange, with a complex profile that evolves with time.
The Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail exemplifies how Virginia’s wine scene continues to grow in both reputation and quality. With many diverse wineries celebrating their heritage while embracing innovation, it’s a destination that sparks curiosity and explores celebration.
