Lately, it seems the trend is to read about small boutique wineries being acquired by larger corporations. You rarely hear about founders returning. Recently, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates announced the sale of Patz & Hall, the Sonoma Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer, back to James Hall, one of the original co-founders.
Eight years after the sale of Patz & Hall to Ste, Michelle, co-founder James Hall brought in a few friends to repurchase the winery. Ste. Michelle Wine Estates is refocusing on the Washington market. Hall became the largest shareholder.
This action brings Patz & Hall back to its roots as an independent, artisanal producer producing French style Burgundian wine. It’s a chance to preserve legacy and quality as an independent producer. And while there have been some good additions during the eight years of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, like the sparkling program, it’s great to see a founder reclaim his legacy.
I had the chance to visit Patz & Hall and had a great tour with our guide, Michelle Rulmont. It was fun to see her enthusiasm and excitement about where they are and what was to come. As we toured the facility, there were photos of the grape growers who have been involved for decades and it’s clear the growers play a key role at Patz Hall.
Michelle told us, “It’s focused on the grapes, growers and winemakers. For James, it’s about getting his winery back. It’s great to see him back involved.”
Donald Patz and James Hall met in the 1980s, when they were both working for Flora Springs Winery. With partners Anne Moses and Heather Patz, they launched Patz & Hall in 1988.
James Hall’s reacquisition of Patz & Hall is a milestone in the wine industry, reversing the trend of small wineries being absorbed by larger corporations. This move not only brings the winery back to its roots as an independent producer but also allows Hall to preserve its legacy of crafting exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His return promises a renewed focus on quality and strong relationships with grape growers, ensuring that Patz & Hall remains true to its artisanal roots.
