Merry Edwards Winery stands as a benchmark for excellence in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, renowned for its commitment to crafting wines that reflect both place and pedigree. Founded in 1997 by trailblazing winemaker Merry Edwards, the winery has become known for its elegant wines. Merry sold the winery several years ago, but today, under the guidance of Winemaker Heidi von der Mehden, who worked five vintages with Merry, the winery continues to honor its legacy while embracing new milestones, such as the debut of its first single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from the acclaimed Meredith Estate as well as a 25th anniversary pinot noir.

Crafted from a two-acre block at the flagship Meredith Estate, this wine is the result of years of careful observation. For many vintages, these grapes contributed their magic to the Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc blend. Heidi recognized something special—purity, complexity, and a special place that could make delicious wine. The 25th anniversary pinot included the best blocks of Pinot Noir.

My line-up was the following:

  • 2023 Merry Edwards Meredith Valley Sauvignon Blanc – notes of stone fruit, citrus and honeydew with a great minerality.
  • 2022 Merry Edwards 25th Anniversary Pinot Noir – this wine marks 25 years of releasing a Pinot Noir. The 2022 vintage is a selection from top vineyards in honor of Merry’s influence. I tasted notes of black cherry, raspberry, cola, earth and dark chocolate.
  • 2022 Merry Edwards Olivet Lane Chardonnay – notes of flowers, citrus, honeysuckle and stone fruit with tropical notes. Lots of acid and it’s complex and has lots of fruit.
  • d2022 Merry Edwards Richaven Pinot Noir – always one of my favorites with notes of rose, cocoa, red fruit, tea, chocolate and fig.
  • 2022 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir – notes of cherries, blueberries, sandalwood, black plum and orange zest.
  • 2022 Merry Edwards Warrens’ Hill Pinot Noir – notes of blackberry, cherry, blueberry, mushroom and Asian spice.

I had the chance to talk with Winemaker Heidi von der Mehden in 2024. What I love about Merry Edwards Wines is their unwavering sense of identity. Whether it’s a bold Pinot Noir or a vibrant Sauvignon Blanc, each wine tells a story of place, people, and passion. The new single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is a testament to the winery’s commitment to evolving, while the 25th Anniversary Pinot Noir is a nod to a remarkable journey.
